A Curse Dark As Gold
Elizabeth C Bunce

Set in the Industrial Revolution in a fictional area of England, this is a really enjoyable retelling of Rumpelstiltskin that is unique enough to keep you guessing. One thing I really liked was the way Bunce worked around the traditional start of the story, omitting a greedy parent’s boasting to a king; Charlotte’s choices are shaped by the difficulties left to her by her father, but they are her own. I also really liked Jack Spinner, and I felt his history was a really clever nod to the story and folklore while completely avoiding the anti-Semitic tones of the original tales.
